Road rage shooting Houston: A 9-year-old girl was shot in the head in an incident on the Southwest Freeway near Fondren, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A 9-year-old child was shot in the head in an apparent road rage incident Tuesday night in southwest Houston.

Ashanti Grant, who is in fourth grade at Savannah Lakes Elementary School in Brazoria County, remains in critical condition.

“You’re just numb. You cry so much, there’s no more tears afterwards,” Ashanti’s grandmother, Elaine Williams, said. “She’s the cutest little angel.”

Williams asks the community to pray for justice and healing.

“You can’t do anything but pray and ask everyone to pray for her,” Williams said.

This prayer request is answered by the fathers of the neighborhood in Brazoria County where Ashanti lives and goes to school.

“It makes me cry a little bit because it reminds me of my own children,” Stephon Davis said. “I’m just totally speechless. When I heard about this, my heart sank. So my thoughts and prayers are with the family.

“I have a son who goes to Lakes of Savannah, and I travel around Houston a lot. It’s scary. I just hope all these angry people stop all this nonsense,” a man named Kenneth said. .

The shooting happened at 9 p.m. at 9800 Southwest Freeway, when a family of four — Ashanti, her mother, father and 11-year-old brother — were in a Tahoe on their way to the grocery store.

Police believe they were heading north on the freeway when they came between a white truck and another vehicle that appeared to be running.

One of the racing drivers, believed to be in a white GMC Denali, repeatedly cut the family vehicle. The Denali then drove behind the family’s vehicle and someone inside the Denali fired, injuring the girl in the head, police say.

The driver of the Tahoe was able to stop at a Shell gas station at 7402 Fondren, where officers responded to a shooting call.

From there, paramedics took the child in critical condition to Texas Children’s Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

“She’s just an innocent child. She didn’t deserve this,” Williams said.

Ashanti’s mother, father and brother were not injured. Now they are all still in the hospital by his side.

“Meanwhile, this guy is still out on the street somewhere. He knows what he’s done,” Williams said. “Someone picks up the phone, even though you’re related to them. You gotta think about that kid, and how we think she’s in the hospital fighting for her life. A bullet went through her. the head.”

Police had only a vague description of the people in Denali, saying the driver was a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s. It is believed that he has short hair and that his passenger may have been a Hispanic woman.

Officials said they believe the Denali had arrows on the blinders.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact HPD’s Major Assault and Domestic Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case.
