Dean Ashton insists England will not have an easy journey to the knockout stages of Euro 2020.
The Three Lions, who face Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic in Group D, are one of the bookies’ favorites to win the tournament, which kicks off Friday night – with every match live on talkSPORT.
Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish could light up the tournament for England as Gareth Southgate looks to lead his country to a first European Championship triumph.
However, former England striker Ashton believes rival teams and supporters should “laugh” at the confidence of Three Lions fans to win Euro 2020.
He told talkSPORT: “I want to feel like I did about the 2018 World Cup.
“I want to be proud of my country, proud of my team in terms of not thinking, ‘we’re going to win it, we have these wonderful players – that automatically means we’re going to win it’.
“I bet other countries laugh at us when we act like we do and just throw out teams like the Czech Republic like we’re just going to beat Croatia.
“Croatia are an incredible team. They are World Cup finalists with a lot of players from that game still on the squad.
“They still have a lot of experience because we have fantastic and exciting young players, we automatically think, ‘we’re going to overthrow these teams’.
“It’s going to be hard.”
Ashton is adamant. Belgium and Croatia are the only notable teams England have beaten since their 2018 World Cup semi-final.
He said: “What have we really done to be the favorites or the second favorites? [to win Euro 2020]? Who have we really beaten since this World Cup?
“Belgium and Croatia are the two teams that you would say are very good teams – that’s it. Spain, but that was when they were really in decline.
