Rittenhouse jury ‘seemed to sanction vigilantism’

National Urban League CEO Marc Morial said Thursday on MSNBC that the jury in the Kyle Rittenhouse case had sent a message of “vigilantism” sanction.

Rittenhouse was acquitted of the murder and other charges after shooting two men and injuring a third during a Black Lives Matter protest last year in Kenosha, WI.

Asked about Ahmaud Arbery’s verdict, Morial said, “I hope this sends a message to all vigilantes and anyone who wants to be vigilantes that you are not going to get away with it. That you’re not going to shop around, and what we need to tackle in this country is the culture of gun violence. This idea that I can do justice to myself. That it’s kind of okay for me to use guns on people going about their own business because I don’t think they belong in my neighborhood, right? They do not belong to a particular domain. This is what is at the heart of it all. This movement of violence has mixed with a rise in hatred based on race, religion and status in this country. “

He continued, “This is where this moment of responsibility will hopefully spread. While at the same time, in this case, we see this result, we saw it in the Rittenhouse case, a very different result. A jury that seemed to sanction self-defense. So in this week of these two trials, in this last period, when we have seen these two verdicts, the outcome is mixed. we are celebrating the idea that justice and accountability have won here, but we still have to look at the case, and I don’t think justice has been served and self-defense has been approved. so what to take away from people is what is learning? “

Morial added, “I hope prosecutors across the country will gain the courage and conviction to uphold the law. I hope every state passes a hate crimes law that has bite and prosecutors aren’t afraid to use it, and citizens use their iPhones and videotape acts of injustice. we saw in the George Floyd case. “
