Riot police intervene as Eintracht Frankfurt supporters target West Ham supporters amid ‘unsavory’ invasion after Europa League win

Eintracht Frankfurt fans packed the pitch in their hundreds to celebrate West Ham’s victory in the Europa League final in what talkSPORT commentator Sam Matterface described as “unsavory” scenes.

A white-hot Deutsche Bank Park created an extraordinary atmosphere throughout the Bundelsiga side’s 1-0 triumph over the ten-man Hammers, which sealed a 3-1 aggregate victory in the semi-finals.

It ended West Ham’s Europa League dream and sealed a first European final for the German side since 1980.

Rafael Santos Borre struck after Aaron Cresswell was sent off early – and West Ham manager David Moyes was also sacked following an outburst at a ball boy.

The game threatened to boil over as clashes broke out between the two teams – and riot police were needed full time to prevent violence between the two groups of fans.

Matterface, watching from the commentary booth, described the events unfolding in front of him on talkSPORT.

“It ends with a pitch invasion and a flood of white shirts on the playing surface,” he began.

“West Ham are desperately trying to get their players off the field and to safety.

“Many Frankfurt fans charge onto the pitch from all directions. Some of them are heading towards West Ham fans in the area.

“It is an unsavory end to the procedure. It should be a time of celebration. Riot police formed a perimeter around West Ham fans.

“Frankfurt fans are still moving in numbers to the left corner of the stadium where the West Ham supporters are. It’s an unseemly end to what has been a wonderful Europa League campaign for both clubs.

“There is history in this competition and it is a distant memory for most of these fans. There is joy among a number of fans, but there is menace among others.

“The riot police are now charging, the Frankfurt fans are forcing them across the halfway line. They beat them with their laths, back over the halfway line.

“These are scenes reminiscent of when these two clubs were in European football for long periods of time.

“We are almost back to the eighties. It’s not particularly impressive. It’s a pretty sour note to end this particular game on what should be a celebratory day.

“These supporters gave us so much color and so much energy over the 90 minutes.”

However, once the beaten Premier League players walked off the pitch, the party continued and there were happier scenes.

Sebastian Rode celebrated with happy fans and now all eyes are on Sevilla.
