Rio Ferdinand dismisses William Saliba comparison as ‘madness’ despite Arsenal star’s ‘great potential’

io Ferdinand has insisted that comparisons between him and William Salbia are premature despite the young defender’s strong start to the Arsenal first-team career.

William Gallas has compared the Frenchman to the former Manchester United star, who won six Premier League titles and a Champions League during a busy career.

Gallas said: “Saliba is a very good player. When I look at him, he reminds me of a player I used to play against – and that player is Rio Ferdinand. If you look at how Saliba plays and how Rio played when he was young, they have the same style.

But Ferdinand countered that while the Arsenal centre-back has the potential to succeed, it is “madness” to raise expectations so high.

He told Vibe with Five: “How many Premier League games has he played? How many Premier League games had I played by then?

“I broke the UK transfer record at that time and people are making comparisons? It’s madness! Give the boy time! He is fine. But you don’t judge the players when things are going well, you say, ‘Great…I would like to see the next phase’.

“When it’s all going against you and it’s a little distressed, I always want to see the chest come out, I always want to see the shoulders back and I always want to see you want the ball and see you on the front foot with that determination and desire… a lot of what we don’t get at Man United.

“But Saliba, he shows great potential. Young player of the year in France last year but he has a lot to do to make sure he stays in the team but he started very, very well.
