Rio Ferdinand delivers his verdict on Jadon Sancho’s England snub: ‘He could probably feel unhappy’

adon Sancho has reason to feel aggrieved at missing out on a place in the England squad for this month’s Nations League fixtures, according to Rio Ferdinand.

A pair of goals before the squad announcement had put the Manchester United winger back in the game and he added another after missing, beating FC Sheriff in the Europa League.

After the midweek win, Sancho insisted he remained focused on working hard to prove himself to Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup, but ex-United star Ferdinand believes that the number of calls not playing regularly should have made him a candidate.

He told BT Sport: “Jadon Sancho will be a player who will probably look at this team and think, ‘I’ve done what’s expected of me as a winger in terms of performance – in terms of numbers this season – and I’m doing better in numbers than the other players, and I still don’t get a look.

“He could probably feel unhappy. But I think this team is a lot of what we expected.

Marcus Rashford is another United striker who has seen an improvement in form but, following an injury last week, he also missed out.

Southgate said: “There were some players we wanted to keep involved this time, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end for some of the others who aren’t involved.

“Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown encouraging signs recently. He’s a player we know well, so if he can play at a high level in the next few weeks, he will of course be under consideration.
