Rich Strike did the impossible at the 2022 Kentucky Derby by winning the race as the longest of the longs at 80-1.
Only one horse in the Kentucky Derby’s 148-year history has won with longer odds. Donerail won the Kentucky Derby in 1913 after finishing 91-1.
Another long shot, Summer Is Tomorrow, led the field for the first half mile of the race on Saturday before being passed by Crown Pride and Messier. Epicenter then took the lead down the home stretch but was found by Rich Strike who stayed close to the rail and edged the favorites to the line.
Rich Strike won a race at Churchill Downs in September 2021, but it was the only victory of his career before Saturday. The three-year-old colt wasn’t even registered in the Kentucky Derby until Friday when another horse, Ethereal Road, was pulled from the field.
Race favorite Epicenter finished second with Zandon third.
