Revive Superfoods is concerned about the presence of tara in one of its smoothies after the Daily Harvest recall of lentil and French leek crumbs

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — On the same day food delivery service Daily Harvest announced that tara flour was the ingredient in one of its products that is making people sick, another company says it pulled a smoothie for sale on its website as it also contains tara.

Zandi Holup is a country singer from Nashville. Holup says Revive Superfoods emailed her offering her products to share with her social media followers.

Holup says she welcomed the offer, but on the same day in March she shot a video while drinking the company’s mango pineapple smoothie, she says she got sick.

“I felt this tightness in my sternum, and then it shot through like a shooting pain right down my back,” Holup said.

Holup says she was hospitalized four times for liver problems for a total of 17 nights, which puzzled her doctors.

“I have a few medical issues right now which is why I’m in the hospital,” Holup said in a video she made from her hospital bed.

“I’m a very healthy person, so it was really scary,” Holup told ABC7 News I-Team reporter Melanie Woodrow.

In June, through social media, Holup says he learned that Daily Harvest customers were hospitalized and sick with symptoms similar to his by the company’s French Lentil + Leek Crumbles recall.

“After the Daily Harvest story came out, I put two and two together,” Holup said.

Holup, who says she has never eaten Daily Harvest, connected online with a handful of other Revive Superfoods customers who said they had experiences similar to hers. She says she also spoke to the FDA and food advocate Bill Marler.

Marler discovered that tara, a plant-based protein source, was an ingredient in Daily Harvest’s French Lentil + Leek Crumbles and Revive Superfoods Mango and Pineapple smoothies.

“We’ve known for two weeks that the ingredient that could make people sick was tara,” Marler told Woodrow in an interview Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Daily Harvest said ‘tara flour’ was the source of the problem and it was investigating its sick customers.

The CEO of Daily Harvest said they are still working with the FDA and the tara flour producer to determine what specifically makes people sick. Daily Harvest did not publicly name its tara producer, only that the company no longer sources from that producer and that tara flour was only used in its French lentil + leek crumbles.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Revive Superfoods told ABC7 News that since he became aware of this ingredient as a potential hazard, he contacted regulatory authorities and removed the mango and pineapple smoothie from sale on its website. The company’s CEO said the company conducted extensive testing for all major pathogens, toxins and allergens and all results were negative.

Writing in part in an emailed statement, “Our ingredients, processes and suppliers may differ from Daily Harvest but we take no chances. We have contacted Daily Harvest and the FDA for clarity on what specifically makes protein there will be a problem even if the results are negative.”

The statement is insufficient for Holup.

“I don’t even think they’ve really warned their customers about the products that are in the freezers right now,” Holup said.

The CEO of Revive Superfoods says the company is using every resource to get to the bottom of it.

Hello everyone! Yousuf Soliman here. CEO and co-founder of Revive Superfoods. We recently became aware of a public memo from Daily Harvest stating that the tara flour ingredient was the cause of the issue that prompted their recall. Since we became aware of this ingredient as a potential hazard, we immediately contacted regulatory authorities and removed it from sale on our website. We also immediately performed extensive testing for all major pathogens/toxins/allergens and all results came back negative.

Our ingredients, processes and suppliers may differ from Daily Harvest, but we take no chances. We contacted Daily Harvest and the FDA for clarity on what specifically causes the tara protein problem, even though the results are negative.

Our number one priority is always the safety and health of our customers and I can assure you that we are using every resource to get to the bottom of this. My commitment to you will never waver to ensure that our quality products continue to be a source of good food and living a better lifestyle.

Sincerely,

Yousuf Suleiman
