Retired Democratic Representative Jackie Speier calls for age limit for lawmakers

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), whose legacy will include defending the #MeToo movement, is not seeking re-election and uses the window before stepping down to take some tee shots, including calling for a mandatory retirement for lawmakers at age 75.

In an interview with the Chronicles of San Francisco “It’s All Political” podcast, Speier was asked what she would like to see changed in Washington, DC.

“Maybe ban how long you can serve,” Speier, 71, said. “No term limit. An age ban.

The the Chronicle reported:

If members of Congress were to “go home” – Washington – talks about not seeking another term – at age 75 that would mean a gold watch for several members of the Northern California delegation, including Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, 78 years old; Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, 78; John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, 78; and Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, 77. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, is reportedly on deck when she turns 74 next month.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, 88, would not have served her last two six-year terms with the idea. Thirteen members of the Senate – whose average age was 63 at the start of this term – are over 75 years old.

And yes, Speier’s cut would include his friend, President Nancy Pelosi, who is 81 – and perhaps did her best job this year by pushing President Biden’s two infrastructure bills through a caucus. grumpy democrat.

Speier said she was unsure of Pelosi’s plans.

“Well, she said this would be her last term as a speaker,” Speier said on the podcast. “I think she’s committed to this being her last. I don’t know what his plans are. I don’t know if the members of the caucus would want to convince her to represent herself as a speaker again.

Speier had an idea for Pelosi’s post-retirement agenda.

“I have this fantasy that when she decides to leave – when she does – she is appointed ambassador to Italy,” Speier said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where she ends up,” Speier said.

Speier’s political career began and was elected to Congress in 2008 after surviving an attack by cult members that killed his then-boss, Rep. Leo Jay Ryan (D-CA).

Speier recalled how she was inspired by a career in public service after accompanying her boss Ryan on a flight to Guyana in 1978 to rescue 900 followers from cult leader Jim Jones.

Ryan and four others were shot dead on an airstrip by gunmen who were Jones supporters. Speier, who was 29, was shot five times. Jones convinced his followers to drink cyanide punch in a mass murder-suicide.

“It’s time for me to come home,” Speier said of his resignation. “It’s time for me to be more than a wife, a mother and a friend on the weekends.”
