A Plague Tale: Requiem is one of the most anticipated titles of 2022 that will continue the story of Amicia and Hugo, who players met in A Plague Tale: Innocence.
Xbox Bethesda Games Showcase, part of the ongoing Summer Game Fest 2022, showed off a new gameplay clip from the sequel, featuring Amicia in violent action.
A Plague Tale: Innocence was released in 2019 and is set in medieval France during the Hundred Years’ War. Players followed the trial and struggles of siblings, Amicia and Hugo, as they faced a world falling apart after the Black Death.
The game’s narrative and mechanics received positive reviews, and players eagerly awaited a sequel.
A Plague Tale: Requiem will feature a much more violent Amicia
As the title of the gameplay trailer, End of Innocence, suggests, the game should mark Amicia increasingly violent as she pays no attention to others telling her not to kill.
The clip continues to show her mercilessly taking down one enemy after another, saying, “I’m tired of being scared.” She goes so far as to push one soldier into the mass of rats and smother another, saying they have nothing to fear.
This is a marked shift from the protagonist players knew from the first game. There’s an unwavering determination in her voice, the swing of her blade, and on the tip of her arrows (yes, she now carries a crossbow). But as with his first kill in Innocence, it’s likely his acts of violence will take a toll on him.
The trailer ends with Amicia asking Hugo to “do it, quick.” Hugo raises his fist and squeezes the ground as the screen darkens. The following image shows a yellow tinted screen as the camera tracks a horde of rats scurrying towards the target, which likely means players will have some ability to summon and control plague carriers.
The game’s official description states that players will begin a harrowing journey through a brutal and breathtaking world, while discovering the cost of saving the people they love. Players will be able to attack as Amicia from the shadows or from the front with “a variety of weapons, tools and supernatural powers”.
The Game Awards 2021 trailer showed off the different landscapes players will be able to explore. The Xbox Bethesda Games Showcase trailer did the same, showcasing glimpses of urban and rural landscapes.
Those who enjoyed Amicia and Hugo’s earlier journey are surely in for another harrowing adventure with a narrative that will resonate much the same as its predecessor. The game will be released in 2022 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (Day One on Game Pass), PC and Nintendo Switch.
