Republican Senate candidate charged with making false allegations of child trafficking

A Republican US Senate candidate from Maryland has been arrested for making a false report about child trafficking.

Ryan Dark White, 54, was jailed at the Harford County Detention Center following his arrest on Friday, the county sheriff said in a statement. White is running as Jon McGreevey in Tuesday’s GOP primary, seeking to challenge Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who is also facing a primary contest.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office said White, an adult bookstore worker in Edgewood, Maryland, falsely reported in April that a 10- to 12-year-old girl was trafficked by a man at the bookstore and forced to perform sexual acts on male customers. The sheriff’s office identified both the man and the girl, and said investigators found no evidence to support White’s claims.

“It is shameful that a candidate for public office would fabricate such a story and use it to advance his own political agenda,” said Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler.

Ryan Dark White, also known as Jon McGreevey.

Gahler also denounced an unnamed political candidate who was not charged in the investigation.

“It is even more appalling that another person, running for a law enforcement position, would adopt such a patently false narrative in an effort to gain political traction – nothing more,” Gahler said.

The Baltimore Sun reported that White made joint appearances with Andy Kuhl, a Republican sheriff nominee in Baltimore County.

Kuhl’s campaign website warns of a multi-state child trafficking operation and states, “Jon McGreevey and I are going undercover to expose these sick and heinous crimes against children. We must bring these criminals to justice.

White previously said he started working at the bookstore as part of an undercover operation to dig up drug rings and claimed there were drugs stored there.

“They started exploiting children,” White said in a video on Kuhl’s campaign site dated June 9, according to CBS. “There’s also a child trafficking ring going through there.”

Gahler decried the resources his office wasted investigating the bogus report.

“I am beyond grateful that this young girl is safe, but extremely disappointed that someone is trying to discredit and denigrate the work of the dedicated men and women of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and the Child Advocacy Center,” Gahler said. “The alarmism and antagonism has wasted the time and energy of our staff, whose time would have been better spent protecting the citizens of Harford County, instead of investigating the lies.”

White is among 10 candidates vying for the Republican Senate primary.
