Republican says FBI seized cellphone — RT World News

The seizure is believed to be part of an investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to void the 2020 election

Federal agents seized Rep. Scott Perry’s (R-Pennsylvania) cellphone, the lawmaker said, lambasting the agency for “banana republic tactics” amid an investigation into the 2020 presidential race.

Perry announced the decision in a statement Tuesday, saying “3 FBI agents visited me and seized my cell phone” while traveling with his family.

“They made no attempt to contact my attorney, who would have arranged for them to have my phone if they so wished,” said Perry, adding “I am outraged – but not surprised – that the FBI, under the direction of Merrick Garland’s DOJ, is seizing the phone of a sitting congressman.”

The FBI executed a search warrant for Perry shortly after he raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, reportedly as part of an investigation into Trump’s handling of presidential documents. including classified documents, which may have been brought to the Palm Beach facility.

While it’s unclear whether the two investigations are related and the FBI hasn’t provided a reason for the search warrant, former senior Justice Department officials testified that Perry played “an important role” in attempts to install Trump ally Jeffrey Clark as acting attorney general shortly after the 2020 race, in hopes he would support the then-president’s claims of voter fraud by mass.

According to a source cited by CNN, Perry’s phone was “image” by federal agents and returned to him later Tuesday, noting that authorities would need a second warrant to access the contents of the device.

The legislator nevertheless condemned the office for “banana republic tactics” — echoing the rhetoric of other Republicans following Monday’s Mar-a-Lago raid — and a “unnecessary and aggressive action.”

“My phone contains information about my legislative and political activities, and personal/private discussions with my wife, family, constituents and friends,” he said. “None of this is the government’s business.”
