Several reproductive rights organizations are launching a new six-figure ad campaign targeting Senators especially Democrat Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona with the message that if you are pro-choice, you must also be anti-filibuster.
Until recently, two of the major national abortion rights groups disagreed with the progressive push to end filibustering, which requires 60 votes to pass most laws in the Senate. Planned Parenthood said it “supports” efforts to end the filibuster, but the problem is not its “goal.” NARAL Pro-Choice America said it is “following the conversation very closely”.
Their concern has always been that if the filibuster goes away, Republicans could push through anti-abortion bills if they win back a majority.
But on September 24, after Texas enacted its six-week abortion ban, NARAL finally came out and approved the end of filibuster. He also joined Fix Our Senate, a coalition of 80 progressive groups aiming to end filibuster to advance issues such as voting rights, gun violence prevention and more. Planned Parenthood is still not a member.
New Fix Our Senate ad – which also includes UltraViolet, Physicians for Reproductive Health, and other reproductive rights organizations – will air on TV and digitally in Washington, DC and Arizona, as well as nationwide , with more focused states to follow. A full-page ad will also appear in the New York Times on Wednesday.
Even though the ad never mentions Sinema, it should be noted that the groups are just starting out in her backyard.
Sinema has a strong record in abortion rights, with a 100% rating from NARAL. But the senator has repeatedly stated that she will not support abolishing filibuster, and groups such as NARAL are now targeting her for not going far enough.
??[Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell] needed only 51 votes to fill the Supreme Court with three ultra-conservative justices – clearly we should only need 51 votes to protect our right to access abortion and make choices about our body, ”Desireé Luckey, director of policy, and Monica Edwards, head of federal policy at URGE: Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity, coalition member, said in a joint statement to HuffPost.
“Senate Democrats, who say they support reproductive rights but remain silent on or against filibuster, only support reproductive rights in name,” they added.
