Representative Location: Shutdown Fight Delays AI Regulations

The long road to comprehensive laws governing AI has hit another obstacle, according to a prominent House Democrat on technology: the fight against government shutdown.

“We’re trying to prevent stupid things from happening, which means it’s very difficult to work on AI,” Rep. said. Ted Place of California, a member of the House Artificial Intelligence Caucus, referring to the fight against the shutdown.

Lieu has proposed laws banning the use of AI to autonomously launch nuclear weapons and creating a national commission of AI experts. He said the technology is still too immature to move forward with comprehensive rules, but said more regulation should eventually come.
