Representative Elissa Slotkin implodes when pressured to reside in lobbyist’s home

Vulnerable Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) imploded during a televised debate when a Michigan news anchor pressed her about the recent bombshell report that revealed she was residing in an apartment owned by a “lobbyist and campaign donor, who is also registered – along with his family – to vote at the same address and works for a company receiving tens of millions of dollars in government funding.

WDIV-TV hosted a televised debate on Sunday between Slotkin and his Republican opponent, Sen. Tom Barrett. The anchor in charge of asking questions referred to the recent report which revealed that Slotkin had moved into a residence owned by Jerry Hollister, an executive at a Lansing-based company that received tens of millions of dollars in federal funding and donated to his campaign.

LinkedIn Hollister said it is responsible for “developing Congress[s]international relations” in the Lansing-based company. Additionally, he and his family are registered to vote at the same address where Slotkin now resides.

However, when asked, Slotkin, trying to defend herself, exploded, saying the attacks on her were “political desperation” since she claimed to be paying fair market value. Barrett also took the opportunity to attack Democrats by saying there were more than 1,500 apartments available in Lansing, Michigan, but Slotkin lives in the one owned by the executive donating to his campaign.

Representative Elissa Sloktin: It’s honestly, it’s like — political desperation. I rent at fair market value. I showed my lease. It’s someone who rents his apartment. He’s my landlord, and I think what really pushed me was that Tom Barrett insinuated that I was living with this man. If you think I live with a man who is not my husband in the same apartment, say so, man! Like, just hang out. But I think there’s a push here that’s beyond normal. The idea that he’s in government relations – 100%, I don’t dispute that. He’s a manufacturing guy from Michigan, but the idea that something bad is going on — if I didn’t pay rent, that would be one thing, but I pay fair rent.

State Senator Tom Barrett: I will say, look at this idea that someone is living with the lobbyist when there are 1,513 apartments available in Lansing, Michigan as of today.

Anchor: Do you really think she lives with a lobbyist

Slotkin: My husband and I would like to tell you about this for insinuating that I live with another man.

Barrette: She claims she lives in the residence owned by a lobbyist where he is also registered to vote. I do not know the circumstances of this arrangement, but I say it is inappropriate for a member of Congress to live in a residence owned by a lobbyist where they are both registered to vote.

As the Democrat called this specific attack on her “political desperation” earlier this year, she attempted to attack Barrett for training with the military. Slotkin posted a maskless selfie while everyone was masked; she claimed her Republican opponent made the hypocritical image “go viral,” but he was actually in practice.

Additionally, an internal poll conducted in June showed Barrett in the lead over Slotkin. Barrett led the incumbent 46.1% to 44.6%, with 10.3% undecided. However, the poll noted that Slotkin is sitting less than 50% on the ballot, which is the worst level since she won the seat in 2018, even though she has name recognition of nearly 100. %.

The two will face off on November 8 in the midterm elections.
