Representative Elaine Luria implies that Donald Trump is a domestic enemy

Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA) hinted Thursday night that former President Donald Trump is an enemy within when she made her closing statement at the Jan. 6 committee’s eighth hearing:

I have first sworn to support and defend the Constitution against foreign and domestic enemies. When I entered the US Naval Academy at age 17, I spent two decades on ships at sea defending our nation against known and identifiable foreign enemies who sought to do us harm.

I never imagined that this enemy would come from within. I was not as prescient as Abraham Lincoln who, 23 years before the Civil War, said, “If destruction is our lot, we ourselves must be its author and finisher.” Donald Trump was the author and we the people, for ourselves and our posterity should not let Donald Trump be the finisher.

His closing statement came after approximately two and a half hours of testimony, live and on video, from various White House staffers saying they believed Trump had to make a statement to his supporters to leave the Capitol on 6 January after some engaged in violence.

Committee members claimed throughout the hearing that Trump did nothing while the violence took place, but in the second half of the hearing they released a video statement that Trump delivered urging his supporters to return home in peace.

Yet Luria claimed he only did so after it was “clear that his efforts to disrupt or violently delay the counting of the election results had failed”, and complained that he told his supporters to return home “affectionately”.

“It was not the message of condemnation and just punishment for those who broke the law that we expect from a president whose oath and duty is to see that the laws are faithfully carried out. But instead of that was his latest version of stepping back and standing ready,” she said.
