Report: Musk plans to block X in Europe due to failure to comply with regulations

Recently, EU officials wrote to Elon Musk to remind him of his company’s legal obligations regarding the European Commission’s Digital Services Act. However, someone close to Elon Musk said he would rather block X across the region and make the X app unavailable to Europeans than comply with the rules.

The latest debacle stems from recent events in Israel, where people often see a series of posts containing misinformation, which is not disputed on the social network. Video game sequences presented as current events, old videos from Syria are recycled and attributed to this or that attack.

Journalists and researchers argue that X is borderline useless as a news source because it contains so much misinformation. In some cases, anti-Semitic hate speech and posts glorifying terrorism go unnoticed. Additionally, Musk himself has repeatedly shared posts from accounts spreading racist content and conspiracy theories.

People familiar with the matter estimate that if Musk blocks Europe, the website’s traffic will drop by about 9%, making the X’s problems even worse in this regard. Daily use of the social network has already fallen by 40% in some regions in recent months.
