Rep. Clyburn offers loved ones thousands of dollars in campaign money

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) reportedly gave several family members more than $200,000 in campaign money in recent years.

The number two House Democrat showed on his campaign expenses, reviewed by Fox News, that five parents benefited from the salary of some of his big campaign hits, amounting to more than $200,000. Federal Election Commission (FEC) records show those relatives include two of her daughters, their husbands and a grandson.

The Democrat’s daughter, Jennifer Clyburn Reed, received $45,000 in “consulting and campaign management fees” from July and December 2020, according to FEC records.

Fox noted that she also collected tens of thousands in “office rent,” but the checks are made payable to a limited liability company owned by her husband rather than issuing them personally. The campaign has spent $62,500 on rent for a company called 49 Magnolia Blossom LLC since March 2020. State business records show Jennifer Clyburn Reed’s husband, Walter A Reed, is the agent for the LLC.

The LLC’s address is the same as Jennifer and Walter’s former home address, which the two bought in February 2003 but sold the property in April 2021, according to Richland County property records. Payments were also reportedly made to Walter for $650 in May 2021 for “office maintenance lighting.” The campaign’s most recent payout to the LLC was this past quarter fundraiser worth $7,500.

Another daughter, Angela Hannibal, received more than $20,000 for truck rentals, canvassing, voter education and catering between April 2018 and October 2019, according to FEC records. Angela Hannibal’s husband, Cecil Hannibal, also received approximately $70,000 for community and district outreach and campaign committee travel reimbursements.

Finally, Clyburn’s grandson, Walter AC Reed, received six payments totaling $21,000 from the campaign committee during the first quarter of 2022 for “campaign management fees.” Overall, Fox News reported that the checks to her grandson dated back to October 2021 and totaled $35,000.

Clyburn, a top Democrat on Capitol Hill and who swayed President Joe Biden in his presidential run, also appeared to be gaining presidential favor for his family. One of his daughters, Jennifer Clyburn Reed, was nominated by Biden to be federal co-chair of the Eastern Crescent Regional Commission last year and was only narrowly confirmed by the Senate.
