Faced with a revival of Montpellier, Stade Rennais suffered a new defeat (2-1) which relaunched the race for Europe, Sunday, at La Mosson, during the 26th day of Ligue 1.

English striker Stephy Mavididi allowed Hérault to lead by two goals (2-0) at the break thanks to his first double of the season, before Breton center-forward Serhou Guirassy closed the gap to twelve minutes of the end. Michel Der Zakarian’s team is tied on points with the Bretons, whose 6th place is threatened by Lens who receives Dijon in the afternoon.

While Montpellier has confirmed the recent feat in Lyon (2-1), Rennes (6th) no longer advances. With two points taken during the last five meetings, Julien Stephan’s team, exposed to criticism, markedly marked time and seriously weakened its European ambition. “There are a lot of teams that do negative or positive series. We are in a negative cycle. We must maintain solidarity and take refuge in work. The locker room is disappointed but not resigned, ”explained Julien Stephan at the end of the meeting.

Even if they were jostled at times, the Héraultais especially demonstrated a rare realism during the first period, and Mavididi signed his return to form with a double. In the 17th minute, the English striker, on the edge of offside, took a free kick from Téji Savanier. Ten minutes later (27 ‘), following a dribble to erase the two central defenders Da Silva and Aguerd, the left winger adjusted Gomis with a uncrossed shot.

Conversely, Rennes missed its chance. Twice, Guirassy (6 ‘) and Traoré (41’) collided with Swiss goalkeeper Jonas Omlin. “We started the game very well by creating two big chances in the first six minutes. This should have allowed us to open the scoring. And that would have had a positive impact on our confidence. When we’re in a bad cycle, we get punished for our mistakes, ”commented the Rennes coach.

The Montpellier then missed the break, shortly after the recovery. Savanier first sent a penalty over the crossbar (51 ‘), before Elye Wahi and Gaëtan Laborde (61’) failed in quick succession five meters from the goal. Twelve minutes from the end, well served by Clément Grenier who entered the game just like Eduardo Camavinga, the center forward Guirassy reduced the mark by winning his duel with Omlin. A goal and a reaction too late.
