Relieved because the situation was not good for me or the club, reveals Danny Drinkwater

Former Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has admitted he was relieved to end his nightmare with the Blues after just 23 appearances in all competitions in five years at the club. The England midfielder left the London club after his contract expired at the end of June.

chelsea signed Danny Drinkwater of Leicester city in the summer of 2017 on a five-year £35million deal as they aimed to strengthen their midfield. The Blues have sought to re-team N’Golo Kanté and the Englishman after the pair enjoyed a successful season with Leicester City in a sensational 2015-16 campaign as the Foxes won the Premier League title.

It didn’t go to plan for the Chelsea midfielder as he was deemed surplus to requirements by then-manager Maurizio Sarri and the England international struggled to feature in his new team. It would see Drinkwater end his time at Chelsea with just 23 appearances while scoring a solitary goal in all competitions in the space of five years.

Drinkwater underwent several loan spells at clubs such as Aston Villa, Burnley, Reading, and even Turkish side Kasimpasa on schedule, although he was unable to earn a place in the squad. The former Leicester star’s contract with Chelsea expired at the end of June and the midfielder is free to start a new life at his next destination. Drinkwater admitted he was relieved to leave Chelsea after a turbulent time at the club.

“I’m relieved because it’s clear that it wasn’t a situation that was good for me or for the club. I’m angry because of the way it happened and the way I been treated – not bitter though, what if. It was long. It’s like ‘what have you thrown away these five years?’ “Drinkwater told Sky Sports.

“If you had stayed at Leicester, if you hadn’t injured yourself and if the club treated you differently. Those are all ifs. It’s frustrating. I still blame myself for that. But on the other side, will- I keep kicking myself, because I can’t change it,” he added.
