Reid Detmers throws a hit for the Los Angeles Angels against the Tampa Bay Rays

Reid Detmers threw the first individual hit of the 2022 MLB season.

The Los Angeles Angels pitcher shut out the Tampa Bay Rays, 12-0, Tuesday night in Anaheim.

Detmers was perfect for five years before walking 3-2 to Taylor Walls on a pitch that only missed the start of the sixth inning. In the seventh, Rays outfielder Brett Phillips reached base on an error by Angels first baseman Jared Walsh.

That was it for the Rays as far as base runners go. Detmers finished with two strikeouts and one walk on 108 pitches. His no-hitter is the first for the Angels since Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined for one in July 2019 and is 12th for the entire franchise. It’s the first no-hitter by an Angels individual pitcher since Jered Weaver pitched one in May 2012.

“I just passed out,” Detmers said on the pitch after the game.

Detmers entered Tuesday night’s game with a modest 5.32 ERA on the season and had pitched just 42⅔ innings over two seasons, topping the six innings pitched. But he pitched the game of his life Tuesday night to put his name in the record books as the youngest pitcher in Angels history to hit a clean shot at 22.

Detmers’ no-hitter is the second pitched this season. Five New York Mets pitchers combined not to hit the Philadelphia Phillies on April 29.
