Referee Japan vs Samoa: who is Rugby World Cup official Jaco Peyper

South African Jaco Peyper is one of the referees for this year’s Rugby World Cup.

The highly experienced official returns for a third tournament having also overseen matches in the 2015 and 2019 editions.

Born in Bloemfontein, the 43-year-old made his debut as a Super Rugby referee in 2008.

After captaining the 2011 World Junior Championship final, Peyper moved into full-fledged international rugby in 2012.

A place on the World Cup panel followed three years later, with Peyper joining compatriot Craig Joubert in the 12-strong squad.

Joubert’s retirement from regular refereeing to take up a development role at World Rugby resulted in Peyper becoming South Africa’s best whistler.

In Japan in 2019, Peyper was selected to lead a quarter-final, sending off Frenchman Sebastian Vahaamahina for an elbow in a narrow defeat to Wales.

The referee was later removed from his bid for a semi-final nomination, after appearing to mock Vahaamahina’s actions by posing with a group of Welsh supporters in a photo posted on social media.

His career at the highest level continued, however, with Peyper the marquee opener of this year’s tournament between France and New Zealand and a strong contender for another round of 16 nomination or two.
