Reece James kicked out of England 2022 World Cup squad as Gareth Southgate finalizes plans

Southgate called James on Tuesday night and told the Chelsea defender he would not be part of his 26-man squad for Qatar, which will be named on Thursday.

The England manager doesn’t want to risk James, who is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered against AC Milan on October 11.

James took part in a race to prove his fitness and had told his friends he was confident he would be on the plane to Qatar.

He was first ruled out for eight weeks after injuring his knee against AC Milan on October 11.

The 22-year-old has been doing everything to be fit and flew to Dubai last week to continue his rehabilitation alongside a member of Chelsea’s medical service.

But, with Kyle Walker also in a battle to get fit after groin surgery, Southgate decided he didn’t want to gamble with his fitness.

England kick off their World Cup campaign against Iran on November 21.
