KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Unlike the usual lineup, there was one positive development involving the Red Sox: Chris Sale played Friday.

It was a first step on another comeback trail for the southpaw, who underwent surgery on his left pinkie on July 18 to repair a broken bone. Sale was injured the day before when he was hit by a 106.7-mile-per-hour line drive from Aaron Hicks in the second inning at Yankee Stadium.

With Fenway Park set up for the Mötley Crüe concert, Sale’s training came to Boston College. This rekindled the heart of Alex Cora.
