Record 2.2 million migrants apprehended by Border Patrol in FY22, 604,000 fled

Border Patrol agents apprehended a record 2.2 million migrants who illegally crossed the southwest border into Mexico, according to a source with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Additionally, unofficial year-end figures show an estimate of almost 604,000 migrant flight.

As the record-breaking 2022 fiscal year ended at midnight, a source at U.S. Customs and Border Protection told Breitbart Texas that officers working in the nine Southwest border areas apprehended more than 2.2 million migrants. This represents an increase of nearly 27% from last year’s record of 1.7 million migrant arrests. The source spoke to Breitbart on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to speak to reporters.

The Del Rio sector has risen from second place last year to become the busiest of the Border Patrol sectors with the arrest of nearly half a million migrants this year. The number of arrests rose from nearly 260,000 in FY21 to 480,000 this year, an increase of almost 85%. The number of migrants apprehended in this sector in fiscal year 2020 was just over 90,000.

The Rio Grande Valley sector fell to second place with the arrest of 468,000 migrants. That’s down from last year’s record of nearly 550,000.

In addition to the 2.2 million migrant arrests, Border Patrol officials classified nearly 604,000 others as escapees. This number is a conservative estimate of migrants who are seen crossing the border but cannot be apprehended at the time, migrants who are part of a partially apprehended group, or estimating the number based on traces found in smuggling areas.

The number of getaways is up from last year’s estimate of 500,000 for fiscal 2021.

Agents have previously told Breitbart that the number of leaks is likely much higher due to the constant flow of apprehended migrants along the southern border, hampering the agency’s ability to adequately patrol miles of the border. The lack of routine patrols drives up the number of escapees as there are no Border Patrol agents available to respond to electronic sensors, camera activations and unmanned aerial surveillance sightings.

Editor’s Note: The fiscal year 2022 figures above are from unofficial CBP reports reviewed by Breitbart Texas. Those numbers could change slightly when official numbers are released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Southwest Land Border Encounter Year-End Report later this month.
