Liverpool expected to be in exceptional form ahead of a historic Champions League comeback following their 5-2 dismantling at Anfield in a rematch of last year’s final three weeks ago.
Jurgen Klopp’s side humiliated in-form Erik ten Hag at Manchester United 7-0 just over a week ago, a game in which the whole team clicked and fans dared to dream of their chances in the Champions League.
Fast forward a week and in the last game before traveling to Madrid, Liverpool fall 1-0 bottom of the Bournemouth table, a side who have played just one of their last 10 matches and have already been beaten. 9-0 by Liverpool this season.
The Reds have now fallen back to sixth in the table, although they are still in the hunt for a place in the top four, as they are six points behind fourth-place Tottenham with a game less.
Real Madrid have won just one of their four games since their antics at Anfield, with that victory coming on Saturday as they beat Espanyol 3-1 after back-to-back league draws sandwiched a loss to Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.
The recent drop in points has seen their El Clasico rivals open a nine-point gap at the top of La Liga, with Carlo Ancelotti and co now looking increasingly likely to fail in their defense of the league-winning title last season.
Real Madrid have won six of the last seven meetings with Liverpool, the other ending in a draw, with the Reds last winning in 2009, in a last draw that included a 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu thanks to a late header from Yossi Benayoun.
