Real Madrid defeated Manchester United and Chelsea in the signing of French starlet Eduardo Camavinga.
The 18-year-old joins Spanish giants Rennes for an estimated fee of around € 40m [around £34.4m].
Camavinga, who was in the final year of his Rennes contract, was heavily linked with a Premier League stint all summer, but instead joined Real Madrid on a six-year contract.
The midfielder has three senior caps for France to his name, but is highly regarded as a player of the future.
Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol suggested Camavinga could replace Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric, 35 in the long run.
And a future Ballon d’Or will be seen as a possibility for Camavinga’s agent Jonathan Barnett, who called him “the world’s best young player” earlier this summer.
On Camavinga, Barnett also said: “His journey is tough if you know what he’s been through as a refugee, but his character is incredibly strong.
“This is not your average 18 year old. Playing in front of 100,000 people is not going to scare him.
“He’s a lovely boy and I think he’s going to be a superstar.”
Man United fans may be particularly disappointed to see this transfer fail, with Paul Pogba saying he sees similarities between him and his young compatriot.
Pogba said of his international teammate: “It’s a pleasure to see him put on the [France] shirt. To score after his first starts is frankly wonderful. I was really happy for him.
“I only wish him the best and much more. He has it all. His future is in his hands.
“He’s very comfortable, he’s a little dancer. It reminds me a little of myself. He is not a shy person.
“It’s good, because he’s confident. He has confidence in his qualities. He is a very good youngster, I love him very much.
