Real Madrid 3-1 PSG (3-2 ag): Karim Benzema wins with dramatic hat-trick in Champions League thriller

During the first hour at the Bernabeu, Kylian Mbappe produced an imperious performance as he scored one and denied two others, leaving PSG 2-0 on aggregate and seemingly in control of the draw.

But Benzema pulled one back before scoring twice within seconds as PSG crumbled and the Spanish giants ruthlessly punished their ragged opponents to book a place in the knockout stages.

Mbappe was fit to start for PSG after his injury scare earlier in the week as Mauricio Pochettino was able to name his star trio in attack.

It was Real, however, who flew out of the blocks, offering more in the opening minutes than they did in the entirety of the first leg. Marco Asensio was free in the box within 40 seconds, only for his touch to drop him.

The threat from PSG was obvious, although that didn’t make it any less devastating. Dani Carvajal was executed to shreds in Paris and it was a similar story at the Bernabeu, with the right-back having no answer for Mbappe. The Frenchman was played in and had a left-footed strike well saved by Thibaut Courtois.

A superb move from the visitors involving Neymar and Lionel Messi led to the Argentine sending a ball over Courtois and into the face of goal, although luckily for the home side it was a Real shirt that met him at the second post.

PSG thought they had the advantage the night Nuno Mendes brought it back to Mbappe in the box and he drilled it into the back of the net, but the offside flag was quickly raised to deny it.

The linesman saved Real once but not twice. Five minutes before the break, Neymar swept the ball over and Mbappe charged again free on the left. He opened his body to set up the curling effort in the far corner, only to slot it past Courtois at the near post and double PSG’s overall advantage.

Benzema had two good chances before the break, the first sent straight to Gianluigi Donnarumma and he then headed a big chance wide.

Mbappe’s show continued in the second half, as he produced an absolutely stunning dummy to seat Courtois and then finish in an empty net, but once again the offside flag was in place to rule it out .

From a magical moment to a calamitous moment, as Donnarumma offered Real a way back into the tie. The goalkeeper took an age on the ball and, under pressure, then put it in the way of Vinicius Junior. He put it in the box for Benzema who was free, and the Frenchman made no mistakes from close range.

Vinicius really should have equalized with just under 15 minutes to go as a poor PSG clearance fell on him, but with only Donnarumma to beat he sent his shot well over the bar.

He was leveled on aggregate soon after as Luka Modric slid a glorious pass towards Benzema and with the help of a slight deflection, he searched it past the goalkeeper.

The celebrations were still in full swing when 12 seconds after kick-off Benzema had the ball in the net and the PSG players looked around in complete amazement as they collapsed in remarkable fashion.

The visitors gave it from the kick-off and Real stormed in with Vinicius, Marquinhos embarrassed his body to seemingly get the situation under control but then bizarrely pushed him straight into the path of Real’s main man . Benzema was only too happy to accept the gift, guiding the ball into the corner for the first time.

PSG never seemed to get the goal they needed to send them into extra time, instead producing a more chaotic defense as Real had fresh chances to extend the lead.

It’s another inglorious season in the Champions League for PSG, the only trophy they really dream of, but 13-time winners Real walked after a famous night.
