Real estate heir Robert Durst jailed for the murder of his best friend | US News

American real estate heir Robert Durst was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his best friend more than two decades ago.

The 78-year-old was convicted in a Los Angeles court last month after shooting Susan Berman in the back of the head at her home in December 2000.

Ms Berman had provided Durst with a false alibi after his wife Kathie went missing in 1982.

Los Angeles prosecutors said he killed Ms Berman to prevent her from implicating him in the case.

Durst denied killing either of the women but, during cross-examination, said he would lie even if he killed them.

Durst is the grandson of Joseph Durst, who founded the Durst Organization, one of Manhattan’s largest commercial real estate companies.

His father, Seymour, took control of the business and later handed it over to a younger brother, Douglas.

Robert Durst settled his share of the family fortune and was estimated by prosecutors at US $ 100 million.
