Jamie O’Hara isn’t fully convinced by Raphael Varane as Manchester United have offered to pair the Real Madrid star with Harry Maguire next season.
Talks between United and Madrid continue as the Red Devils seek to seal a £ 50million transfer for the French center-back.
At 28, Varane has four Champions League titles and a World Cup to his name, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in world football during a ten-year spell with the Spanish giants.
It is understood that Madrid want to keep him but could be forced to let Varane go with a one-year contract.
O’Hara sees Varane as a top signing, who would form a “world-class” partnership with England star Maguire, but the former Tottenham midfielder raises doubts.
Varane was exposed during Real Madrid’s Champions League elimination against Chelsea last season and did not cover himself in glory during France’s Euro 2020 campaign.
O’Hara told talkSPORT: “My question would be, why is he leaving Real Madrid?
“Everyone claims he’s the best center-back in the world, so why is he leaving Real Madrid?
“They need a center-back and if they got it it improves the team a lot.
“It would be a top signing and it was a position they absolutely had to improve.

“It’s world class, Varane and Maguire. But I would potentially be a little worried about the pace. I saw Varane get ripped apart by Chelsea in the Champions League.
“The pace would be something that the teams would try to exploit against the two of them.”
Furthermore, O’Hara still believes Liverpool will have a more complete defensive pair when Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez return from injury.
“You look at Liverpool, when Van Dijk and Gomez are in good shape they have the pace to get them out of trouble,” he added.
