Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara scored 91 in the second leg of the Ranji Trophy game against Mumbai after being dropped from India’s test squad for the Sri Lanka series. Pujara scored 91 runs from 83 balls strewn with 16 boundaries and six showing signs of form with the bat.
The Indian squad have been selected for the next round of Tests against Sri Lanka and two senior batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Chetshwar Puajra were left to the side. Both have struggled for form lately. pujara scored 602 points with an average of 24.08 in 14 Tests over the past year.
Ranji Trophy 2021-22 started and Saurashtra drew in the tournament opener with Mumbai. Pujara was playing for Saurashtra and Rahane was playing for Mumbai. A day after team selection, Pujara scored 91 points on 83 balls on the final day of the game. Reflecting on Rahane and Pujara’s omission from the squad, head coach Chetan Sharma said the doors were still open to them but they needed to produce performances in the Ranji Trophy.
“We thought long and hard before coming to the decision. We told them we wouldn’t consider them for the two Tests against Sri Lanka, and told them to go and play for the Ranji Trophy. It’s cricket (and) performance matters. The doors are completely open to them. It’s just for these two tests,” selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma told reporters.
“They (Pujara and Rahane) have served the country for so long. They can come back, why not? It’s like a graph, it goes up and down. Rahane hit a hundred yesterday. It’s a management process (bad form),” Sharma said.
