Ralf Rangnick told to drop Marcus Rashford from the squad, while Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are ‘completely broken’ with Manchester United saved by Cristiano Ronaldo ‘hiding the cracks’

Ralf Rangnick has been asked to drop Marcus Rashford from the Manchester United squad amid the striker’s struggles for form.

Fans fell in love with Rashford with his dynamic forward game and fearless attitude when he burst onto the scene in 2016, but he’s been a shadow of the player he’s capable of being this season.

talkSPORT’s Dean Ashton is very worried about Rashford’s game and thinks some time out of the squad would do the 24-year-old good.

Ashton also pointed out that Rashford’s teammates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have cut “completely broken” numbers and are only saved by Cristiano Ronaldo “hiding the cracks”.

In Manchester United’s epic 3-2 win over Tottenham, Ashton said: “To be fair to Spurs, they were by far the better team.

“They had a lot more possession, higher XG (expected goals), they were just wasters in the positions they were in.

“Ronaldo covered up the cracks in what was again a fairly average performance from Manchester United.

“What he delivered you can’t take away from the team because he’s part of the team, but without those goals they would have lost the game.”

Ashton continued, “Nemanja Matic, wow! I know he was never quick but Heung-min Son passed him, midfield players passed him, he can’t physically hack him in that midfield anymore.

“Rashford, oh my word! I know I saw it on TV but when seeing it live I couldn’t believe the player I was watching.

“Shattered trust, lack of interest, this is supposed to be the club he grew up loving. He is supposed to represent Manchester supporters and what it means to play for Manchester United. There was just no Nothing of the sort.

“I think he has to be knocked out of the team completely. Obviously there is a mental problem because he doesn’t look good at all.

Ashton added: “I don’t think we should just single out Marcus Rashford. There are a few players on this side who are completely broken. Their trust is shattered.

“Harry Maguire is one of them. I don’t think he’s a bad player, I think he played very, very good games. But he is broken.

“The pressure that’s on him every week, which is true when you’re at a top club like that, but the enormous scrutiny affects him. He needs help to get that back.

“Shaw is another one, trust completely shattered.”

Man United have arguably their biggest game of the season as they take on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their last Champions League Round of 16 clash.

Ahead of the match, Drive host Adrian Durham suggested Ronaldo could help Rashford, Maguire and Shaw regain their confidence.

Ashton replied: “We don’t know what Ronaldo is doing behind the scenes, but these players need help to gain confidence.

“You don’t suddenly become a bad player. As a player, if you’re not mentally well and in terms of your confidence level, you can very, very quickly look like a terrible player.

“But ultimately that can change and that confidence can change… but right now I would say there are quite a few players who are so much below the levels that they are clearly capable of.”
