Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar will hoist the national flag at the new Parliament building on Sunday, September 17.

According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Dhankhar will hoist the flag atop the ‘Gaja Dwar’ of the new Parliament building. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will grace the occasion.

Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, however, said he would not be able to attend the flag-hoisting ceremony and expressed disappointment at having received the invitation “quite late”.

He wrote to Rajya Sabha general secretary PC Mody on Saturday to say that he had received the invitation for this function only late in the evening of September 15.

The Congress president said he was currently in Hyderabad to attend the meetings of the newly constituted Congress working committee on September 16 and 17 and would return to Delhi on Sunday evening.

“It will not be possible for me to attend the ceremony scheduled for tomorrow morning,” Kharge said.

The new Parliament building, built next to the existing one, was inaugurated on May 28 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
