Rainfall in the Chicago area reaches over 6 inches in some places

CHICAGO (SCS) — Heavy rains hit much of the Chicago area on Sunday with it rains more than the sewers can hold in some areas of the city.

Water gushed like a geyser into the sky in Bucktown and Albany Park as sewers were overwhelmed. Some cars were flooded or damaged.

In one case near Irving Park and Kolmar, a Good Samaritan waded through high water to reach a woman who was stuck in her car. The man pulled her out of a window and took her to higher ground. She was not injured.

The heavy rains also fell in a short time, with some areas reporting 2.6 to 3.5 inches in as little as an hour.

Here are some rain totals for the region on Sunday:

Albany Park: 6.63 inches

Portage playpen: 5.86 inches

Lincoln Square: 5.90 inches

Lisle: 5.56 inches

Downers Grove: 4.78 inches

Naperville: 5.61 inches
