Raheem Mostert injured in San Francisco 49ers’ opener against Detroit Lions

San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert announced on social media on Tuesday that he had chosen to undergo end-of-season knee surgery following a Week 1 injury.

Mostert suffered a broken knee cartilage on Sunday in San Francisco’s win over the Detroit Lions. He was placed on the injured list on Monday after coach Kyle Shanahan said at the time that Mostert would undergo arthroscopy and miss eight weeks.

ESPN reported Tuesday that the 49ers have signed free agent Kerryon Johnson to strengthen the post.

“True, after seeing several doctors and weighing my options, I’m going to have end-of-season surgery to fix my knee,” Mostert wrote on Tuesday. “It gives me, without a doubt in my mind, the best opportunity to come back to 110%.”

Mostert left the Week 1 contest injured after running two 20-yard runs.

His wife then claimed Niners fans sent him “hundreds, thousands” of abusive social media messages angry that the injury-prone Mostert was injured again.

San Francisco ended up riding little-known rookie Elijah Mitchell for 104 rushing yards and one touchdown in 19 carries. The depth chart also includes third-round pick Trey Sermon, a healthy Sunday idle, and JaMycal Hasty.

Johnson joins this full-back team with three years of experience (34 games, 16 starts) with the Detroit Lions. The former second-round draft pick was canceled in May and claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles the next day, but the Eagles later dropped him with an injury settlement.
