Zverev, 25, suffered a horrific ankle injury in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros this year. He underwent surgery in June after damaging ligaments in his right ankle and is currently recovering. “Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the US Open. Get well soon, Alex!” organizers said in a brief statement.

The German said earlier he expected to return from injury to play for Germany in the Davis Cup in September, but added there was a chance he could return earlier and play in Flushing Meadows, as the Rand Slam event is scheduled to start from August. 26. Zverev is a finalist at the US Open in 2020.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal had a great year winning the Australian Open as well as the French Open to claim a record 23 Grand Slam titles. He entered Wimbledon hoping to win the third consecutive Grand Slam title this year, but suffered an abdominal injury and withdrew from the tournament before the semi-finals.

He took a month off to recover from his injury but in the meantime his performances have catapulted him to third place in the ATP rankings just behind Daniil Medvedev. He entered the Cincinnati Masters as the second seed and received a second-round bye. He suffered a three-set loss to Borna Coric and withdrew from the tournament.
