About this story

This word analysis is based on the University of California, Santa Barbara’s U.S. Presidency Project for State of the Union Transcripts, which was delivered as a written report in the early years before it becomes a speech and then a televised national address. In some years (especially the first year of a president’s term), the address is technically a budget address, but we’ve included both forms of address here for completeness.
