The book, scheduled for publication on April 16, has been billed as a manifesto for the future of conservative politics rather than a memoir, although it contains many anecdotes from his political career, including his time in as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The period of mourning following the queen’s death was “very far from my natural comfort zone”, Truss wrote, according to the Guardian. The news, she adds, left her thinking: “Why me? Why now?”
According to the outlet, Truss remembers being “suddenly overcome with emotion” at seeing the Queen’s coffin being brought from the Scottish royal residence of Balmoral to Edinburgh, and says she collapsed “in tears on the couch”.
Since being forced out of office, Truss has barely shied away from the spotlight. The ex-PM spoke out on China and claimed the “deep state” was responsible for the end of her ill-fated premiership. She addressed conservatives in Washington and criticized her successor Rishi Sunak’s economic plans.
The opposition Labor Party, eager to remind voters of Truss’s chaotic administration, accused her of “betraying the trust” of the late Queen – with shadow health secretary Wes Streeting calling Truss a “publicist without shame “.
