Putin calls for AI — RT Russia and the former Soviet Union

Russia must significantly expand its use of artificial intelligence over the next decade, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

While the country is already “a step ahead of some” When it comes to AI, there is still a lot to be done in this area, Putin told attendees at the Artificial Intelligence Journey (AIJ) conference in Moscow.

The task for the next ten years is “to ensure the massive introduction of artificial intelligence. It should cover all sectors of the economy and social sphere, as well as the government system,” said the president.

According to Putin, the country must reach “true technological, digital and, to a large extent, cultural, educational and values-based sovereignty”.

He called on the government to partner with companies in the sector to prepare a bill that would promote AI more effectively.

Russia will organize more conferences on the issue and foreign colleagues from countries “who express the desire to participate” should be invited, Putin suggested.

“There will be no increase in unemployment as a result of a wider introduction of artificial intelligence and robotization… On the contrary, [it will lead to] the emergence of new, more creative, meaningful and interesting professions”, he said.

Technological advances are mainly aimed at improving the standard of living of Russians, Putin explained, adding that the introduction of intelligent systems, industrial robots and automated workplaces will help reduce the number of routine jobs and minimize the human involvement in hazardous production areas.
