Two people, including a child, were killed Thursday in a shootout at a South Florida Publix supermarket, and the gunman also died, police said.
The shooting took place inside a Publix in Royal Palm Beach, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office tweeted. Sheriff’s deputies found a child, woman and man dead from gunshot wounds upon arrival at the store.
MPs responded to the shooting at 11:40 a.m. local time, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera told reporters. They found the three bodies near the store’s production area, she said.
“We are trying to determine what led to the shooting,” she said. “We are talking to witnesses. We are reviewing the video.”
The sheriff’s office said the shooting was not an active shooter situation. No further details were immediately provided.
In a statement, Publix said it was cooperating with law enforcement and could not confirm any additional information.
“Our hearts are with those affected by this tragedy,” the company said.
Publix has more than 800 stores in Florida, according to its website.
