Psa: re-download your Harry Potter e-books from Pottermore before they’re gone for good

If you own Harry Potter eBooks purchased from Pottermore, you may want to re-download your copies before the option is gone for good at the end of the month. The site is sending an email to its customers warning them that the books will no longer be available for download again after January 31, since they were taken off sale in September of last year.

Digitally enhanced editions launched on Apple’s e-book store in October 2015, with releases to other digital stores like Amazon followed later in the year. Pottermore eventually morphed into WizardingWorld.com in 2019.

While the option to re-download existing book purchases from Pottermore will definitely disappear at the end of the month, it shouldn’t be too difficult to keep your existing digital copy. On Twitter, Remarks by Ryan C. Gordon that existing downloads consist of a DRM-free .epub file, which you should be able to transfer to new e-readers in the future (although you will need to convert the .epub file to make it readable on a Kindle).
