PS5, Xbox Series X and GPU prices are still on the rise

Sony, Microsoft, Nvidia, and AMD say they’re doing everything in their power to get a console or graphics card into your hands. But judging by eBay resale prices, their best won’t be good enough this holiday season. A year after the supposed arrival of the next generation of games (narrator: it doesn’t), people are always shell out hundreds of dollars off MSRP for a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, and they often still pay double what a new PC graphics card was originally supposed to cost.

Remember March 2020, when I told you that the two graphics cards in the photo above were worth $ 2,570 combined on the open market? That was a shocking jump from the total of $ 1,660 they could recover in December 2020, already well above their MSRP of $ 1,078. But eight months later, that same photo now has $ 2,605 worth of GPUs in the second-hand market. They didn’t dive at all.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are also posting higher prices this week than in March 2020 – if you take the scalper route, you can expect to pay over $ 800 on average for what should have been a console. $ 500 game play.

Those are the main findings from our latest dive into eBay sales data, but here’s the whole thing you can analyze for yourself. It includes the latest street prices for every console and graphics card released this generation, after filtering out a number of fakes, bundles, outliers (an AMD RX 6800 would have sold for $ 8,260) and others. eBay listings that scrambled the data.

AMD RX 6600 $ 329 $ 592 N / A N / A 1.8x

A “current value” of 1.74x means the PS5 is currently worth 1.74 times its MSRP, on average.

As you can see from the graph, a PS5 is no longer worth $ 1,000 like it was in December 2020, but the discless PS5 Digital Edition can still reach double its asking price on eBay, and even the Xbox Series X appears to be slightly down. more desirable than before. The only bright spot is the cheaper Xbox Series S, which ultimately fell to just around $ 50 from its original list price of $ 300.

There are some surprising findings on the GPU side, like how the RTX 3070 currently recovers more than the 3070 Ti, although it is a bit less powerful for gaming. (Maybe people prefer the 3070’s reduced power consumption, smaller frame, and in some cases the lack of cryptocurrency mining nerves.) For gaming and mining. after what I heard.

Then again, the 3060 Ti Founders Edition is in more demand than ever – the $ 400 card is now bringing in $ 1,447 on average, although I haven’t detailed it in the graph. It’s one of the best choices for small cases, so I’m not totally surprised.

Gross street prices don’t tell the whole story, however. As in March, I also compiled a table of how much consoles and components changed hands on eBay last week, and it’s intriguing: less than half of Sony’s PS5s move, but now almost twice as many Nvidia graphics cards.

How many PS5, Xbox, GPUs changed hands in a week?

Lower used sales figures for consoles don’t necessarily mean a lower supply – in fact, it could easily mean the opposite. Maybe more people are getting satisfaction outside of eBay never needing a scalper, as Sony and Microsoft are allowing more people to buy these consoles at retail instead. But on the GPU side, we can also see how few AMD graphics cards change hands compared to Nvidia, with the excellent stock Radeon RX 6800 barely a blip.

Sadly, there’s no end in sight for the great GPU shortage, so you shouldn’t expect prices to drop anytime soon. Nvidia and AMD expect it to persist through most of 2022, and Intel suggested last month that it probably won’t be resolved until 2023. The chip shortage is a complicated problem, and it takes time. time to create additional factories to meet demand.

Over the past year, using a very particular set of skills that I learned over a long career as a business hunter, I managed to purchase a $ 499 PS5 and an edition of the Founder Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti at $ 399 at MSRP. They’re worth around $ 2,317 today, not that I plan to sell. Hoping that during the next recording, these prices will have dropped considerably.
