Proposition 187 is accepted: the battle ends – and the war begins

California Proposition 187 won alongside Governor Pete Wilson in the 1994 election. But the victories turned out to be a double-edged sword. Wilson, who aspired to run for a higher office, never won another election. And while Proposition 187 was ultimately declared unconstitutional, torpedoed the California GOP, and inspired many Latinos to get involved in their communities, it also laid the political foundation for successful xenophobic campaigns nationwide. This paved the way for Donald Trump to win the U.S. presidency in 2016.

This is the third part of our rerun of the 2019 LA Times-Futuro Studios podcast series “This is California: The Battle of 187”, about the 1994 California voting initiative that aimed to make life miserable for undocumented but radicalized a generation of Latinos in the state.
