Prepaid rates and plans revised after recent increases

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea revised their prepaid plans and announced rate hikes this week. The move by two of India’s top three private telecom players aims to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), which they say will ease pressure on the telecom industry. India’s telecommunications industry has been struggling since Reliance Jio entered the scene and introduced ultra-low tariff plans, sparking a price war.

“The new plans will kick off the process of improving ARPU and help deal with the financial stress the industry is facing,” said Vodafone Idea.

“Bharti Airtel has always maintained that the average mobile revenue per user should be Rs 200 and ultimately Rs 300, in order to provide a reasonable return on capital which enables a financially sound business model,” Airtel added.

The new prepaid rate plans went live on November 25 and 26.
