Premier League star Sam Byram feared retirement but got back into shape with Norwich after two surgeries, 20 injections and a 21-month hiatus

Norwich right-back Sam Byram said he wondered if his hamstring injury would ever heal when he was out for 21 months.

The 28-year-old revealed he had two operations, 20 injections and seen “many specialists” during his time out, all to no avail and leaving the defender in doubt about his ability to return to play.

Byram suffered his bad setback in February 2020, ahead of the COVID-19 outbreak, 25 minutes after a 1-0 home Premier League loss to Liverpool after stretching to try and keep the ball in play.

The former West Ham and Leeds player had no idea he would wait 681 days to throw a ball back – enough time to see Norwich relegated and then promoted to England’s top flight.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan on Tuesday, Byram said of his injury: “After the first surgery didn’t work, then they had to do the surgery again and I thought about that time. “They fixed it, everything is fine, I’m back on the right track.”

“Then five months later, while I was still in pain, I had seen a lot of specialists, I think everyone in the country was a hamstring or groin specialist, and no one could really determine why it was still painful.

“I must have had about 20 injections, tried everything, and at that point I wondered if this was just something that wasn’t going to work? To be fair to the physiotherapy staff here, they have been consistently positive with me, everything is still healing, it just takes time.

“Obviously I didn’t expect it to be that long, but I’m just grateful to be sitting here with the opportunity to replay, it’s something that months ago, it was. an impossible task, so get out of the game against Palace and replay the minutes [on Sunday] it’s something I’m so happy to do again ”.

Byram finally made his return to the Premier League in December, shooting the Norwich Strip for his side’s clash with Crystal Palace and playing the full 90 minutes.

He has since played for the Canaries in their FA Cup third round clash against Charlton Athletic on Sunday, which saw his side achieve a well-deserved 1-0 victory after terrible form.

Following his recovery, Byram said he was eager to go and looked to help Norwich out of the Premier League relegation zone as he aimed to find the best form of his career.

“People tend to say 28-30 is your best, isn’t it,” Byram said, “So I feel like I have more experience than the first time I was there. was, I was involved in a relegation battle before, I also experienced another side of it at West Ham.

“I’m really looking forward to living the next few years personally and doing my best for Norwich, to keep us in this league.”
