Aspinall: Playing every night helps me

The Asp showed off their fighting skills coming back from an early 2-0 deficit, to take a 3-2 lead with the first five legs won on 14 darts or less as the pair served up a treat.

Aspinall’s 84 final had leveled the contest after Wright missed the same goal for the first 170 tournament final, Aspinall only had his advantage seeing Snakebite counterattack with a brilliant 120 combination finish.

However, that was as good as it was for Wright as Aspinall reduced the stretch with check-outs of 74 and 56 giving him a two-legged advantage, a sleek 13-dart leg securing a point, which became two when he pinned the double top after Snakebite missed darts to extend the contest.

Gary Anderson managed a 101 checkout to grab his sixth leg and get a head start on Rob Cross

The Flying Scotsman had lost two of his last three games in the opening week but despite being outclassed by his opponent Anderson was too strong as missed doubles haunted Cross who started off brilliantly.

The 2019 runner-up averaged nearly 116 in the opening rally, but the first four stages were split before Anderson made his move by breaking the cross throw to lead 3-2 with a brilliant 12-dart leg.

Cross’s doubles began to give up on him as he ran out of darts for each of the next two stages. Anderson punished him twice, a Class 70 finish moving him to three legs.

Voltage threatened to come back, firing back at 5-4, 6-5 after Anderson became the first to score. But with a draw for the catch, Voltage missed two darts for a level match and Anderson rushed for the double top victory.

Two consecutive victories for the formidable De Sousa

José de Sousa was winless in his first four Premier League games, but he produced a clinical display to beat James wade and claim a 7-5 victory which catapults him into the image of the play-offs.

De Sousa: If I play well, the victories will come

The Special One are playing in their very first Premier League campaign and in the first week their performances did not get the pay they deserved but an average of 101, five max of 180 and a success rate of 75% on his doubles secured him an impressive victory. .

De Sousa opened with a brilliant 110 finish as there was little to separate the pair from the start, and it was the Portuguese who took the decisive first step. A 14-dart inning gave him a 3-2 lead before continuing with a magnificent 12-dart inning that ended on target for the first two-innings advantage of the competition.

Wade did little harm and a 13-dart leg kept him in one leg, but De Sousa conjured up another two-leg flurry to secure a point. But The Machine is tough to break and with a triple-digit average himself he won the next two stages to hold on with a chance to share the points.

But the Portuguese pitcher came together to wrap up the win with the best leg of the game, needing only 11 darts to get the most points.

Lackluster MVG looks back on winning ways

Michael van Gerwen accused his poor performance of focusing too much on Glen Durrant’s situation and not on his own game, but was relieved to take the victory.

Michael van Gerwen accused his poor performance of focusing too much on Glen Durrant’s situation and not on his own game, but was relieved to take the victory.

Van Gerwen’s campaign has been far from the constant winning machine that won five Premier League titles before missing the play-offs for the first time last year. A 7-3 win over an out-of-the-ordinary Durrant won’t do much to allay his concerns, as he missed an astonishing 22 double-handed and averaged darts in the mid-80s for much of the contest.

MVG was far from dominant as he opened a 4-1 lead after Duzza beat a nervous opener that set the tone for the game. Durrant missed a host of opportunities to keep in touch, but despite Van Gerwen’s wandering finish, he couldn’t get close enough to make forays.

The three-time BDO World Champion hinted at a possible comeback and a welcome return to form when he won the sixth and seventh legs – the latter with a clinical two-dart 76 check-out.

But Van Gerwen managed to cross the finish line, with an improved performance on the outer ring and an increase in score enough to keep Durrant at arm’s length and a welcome return to victory.
