Powerful Iowa Tornado Level Structures Halt Air Traffic
A large tornado touched down Saturday night near Iowa’s capital, Des Moine, damaging heavy structures, sending people fleeing to shelters and stopping nearby air traffic.
A large tornado struck near Highway 159 just south of Winterset, Iowa, where a gas leak was later reported. Another tornado was reported just south of Norwalk, which is an outlying suburb of Des Moine.
All air traffic was suspended in the area and a tornado warning was issued for Des Moine.
People fled to shelter, with many flocking to a tornado shelter at the Des Moine airport.

The tornadoes are part of a system moving across the Midwest Saturday afternoon and into the evening. Tornado warnings remain in effect for the towns of Moravia, Rathbun and Iconium.
