Pope Francis urges Italians to welcome migrants and have more children

Pope Francis on Sunday urged Italians to have more children while opening the country’s doors to more migrants, pleading for them to be “welcomed, accompanied, promoted and integrated”.

Speaking in southern Italy at the 27th National Eucharistic Congress of the Catholic Church which coincided with the Italian national elections, the pope addressed key issues in the national campaign.

These included immigration and the demographic decline of the Italian national population.

Both subjects have previously was addressed by Francis with his encouragement of open borders, a feature of many public statements.

AP reports that Francis and his hosts both referred to voting at the open-air Mass, although Italy’s episcopal conference has previously urged Italians to vote in the closely watched election that could bring Italy its first right-wing populist anti-mass migration coalition, Eurosceptic parties since World War II.

At the end of the open-air mass in Matera, the 85-year-old Pope took the floor to ask Italians to have more children.

“I would like to ask Italy: more births, more children,” he said, acknowledging that Italy has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, leading to a “demographic winter” that the pope has already spoken of, as reported by Breitbart News.

Francis also weighed in on a perennial issue in Italy, recalling that Sunday coincides with the Catholic Church’s World Day for Migrants and Refugees.

Francis called for a future in which “God’s plan” is implemented, with migrants and victims of human trafficking living in peace and dignity, and for a “more inclusive and fraternal future”.

He added: “Immigrants must be welcomed, accompanied, promoted and integrated”.
