Police officers organize fundraiser to help pay child’s medical bills

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Muscle Shoals Police Department (MSPD) held a fundraiser on June 7 selling hot dogs, hamburgers and other food items to help pay for the medical bills of Tobias McBrayer, the son of the MSPD officer Bobby McBrayer.

Tobias McBrayer suffers from Sturge-Weber syndrome type 3, a rare and lifelong syndrome that will require surgery and annual appointments with specialists.

Lorie McBrayer, Tobias’ mother, told News 19 that Sturge-Weber syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation. She later said treatment can be expensive, which is why community support is so important.

“We’re actually going to John Hopkins (University) to see the main Sturge-Weber specialist,” McBrayer said. “Without our community and everyone helping us, we might not have been able to make this appointment.”

McBrayer later added that because of the support from co-workers, family members and others in the community, they are very hopeful for Tobias’ future.
