Police clash with armed and barricaded woman on Fairfax County Highway

Virginia police continued negotiations Wednesday morning with an armed and barricaded woman nearly 24 hours after the clash began along a Fairfax-area freeway.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the confrontation began around 11 a.m. Tuesday when the woman barricaded herself inside a car.
“We are still at the scene of the barricade at 7400 (block) Richmond Hwy. A woman remains in a vehicle armed with a handgun,” the department tweeted around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. “Richmond Hwy remains closed between Lockheed (Boulevard) and Boswell (Avenue).”
Crisis negotiators and members of the Special Operations Division continue to work to peacefully resolve this barricade, the agency reported.

Police said the closure was expected to impact rush hour traffic and asked drivers to avoid the area.
Police spokesman Lt. James Curry told local outlet ABC7 that a team of negotiators were in communication with the woman, who barricaded herself after a brief police chase on Tuesday morning.
It was not immediately clear why the police were pursuing the woman.
“The goal here is to get her out peacefully and fix this,” Curry told the outlet.
